Computer science / IT

Computer science/IT programmes of study : Key stage 3, 4 and 5.

KS3 Computing

High quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to succeed in our increasingly technological world. Computing has strong links with mathematics and science. It provides insights into both natural and artificial systems.

Pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, students are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content.

Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

KS4 iGCSE Computer Science

This iGCSE syllabus will develop:

  • Computational thinking, that is thinking about what can be computed and how, and includes consideration of the data required
  • An understanding of the main principles of solving problems by using computers
  • An understanding that every computer system is made up of sub-systems, which in turn consist of further sub-systems
  • An understanding of the component parts of computer systems and how they interrelate, including software, data, hardware, communications and people
  • The skills necessary to apply understanding to solve computer-based problems using a high-level programming language

KS5 AS and A level Computer Science

AS & A Level Computer Science encourages learners to meet the needs of higher education courses in computer science as well as twenty-first century digital employers. It encourages leaders to think creatively, through applying practical programming solutions, demonstrating that they are effective uses of technology.

Learners develop computational thinking & programming skills to solve computer science problems.  AS and A Level Computer Science will help learners develop a range of skills such as thinking creatively, analytically, logically and critically. They will also be able to appreciate the ethical issues that arise with current and emerging computing technologies.
